Stranded on the Side of the Road in Costa Rica? Here’s What to Do

Nobody plans to end up stuck on the side of the road in Costa Rica.

But eventually… it happens to almost everyone.

Maybe it’s a flat tire outside Tamarindo.
Maybe your battery dies after a beach sunset in Nosara.
Maybe the engine starts overheating somewhere between Liberia and the coast while Google Maps confidently says:

    “You have arrived.”

    Classic Costa Rica moment.

The good news? Most roadside problems here are solvable if you stay calm and know what to do next.

    First Things First: Stay Safe

If your vehicle suddenly stops working:

    • Pull over safely as far from traffic as possible

    • Turn on your hazard lights

    • Stay visible, especially during rain or nighttime

    • Avoid standing in the middle of the road

    • If possible, stay inside the vehicle in isolated areas

Roads in Costa Rica can be narrow, dark, and unpredictable — especially outside the city.

The Most Common Roadside Problems in Costa Rica

These are the issues drivers deal with the most:

    Flat Tires

Potholes, gravel roads, and construction zones are everywhere — especially during rainy season.

A lot of expats discover very quickly that Costa Rican roads can destroy weak tires fast.

    Dead Batteries

This happens constantly in beach towns.

Heat, humidity, and sitting parked for long periods can kill older batteries surprisingly fast.

    Overheating Engines

Long uphill drives and hot temperatures can push cooling systems hard, especially in older vehicles.

    If your temperature gauge spikes:

    • Pull over safely

    • Turn off the engine

    • Do NOT immediately open the radiator cap

Getting Stuck in Mud or Flooded Roads

Rainy season in Costa Rica is beautiful… until your tires disappear into mud near a beach road.

    If water levels look risky:
    don’t try to “send it.”
Many vehicles get seriously damaged this way every year.

Why Roadside Assistance Matters in Costa Rica

One thing many expats underestimate is how different roadside support can be here compared to the US or Canada.

    In some rural areas:

    • tow trucks may take longer

    • mechanics may be far away

    • phone signal can be weak

    • night driving becomes difficult quickly

Having access to reliable roadside help makes a huge difference.

A Few Things Experienced Drivers in Costa Rica Always Keep in the Car

    Locals learn this early.

A small roadside kit can save you hours:

    • flashlight

    • portable tire inflator

    • jumper cables

    • phone charger

    • drinking water

    • rain jacket

    • emergency triangles

Bonus points if you also keep snacks.
Because sometimes Costa Rican traffic turns a “quick stop” into a life experience.

    Final Thoughts

Breaking down on the road is stressful anywhere.

But in Costa Rica, staying calm and prepared goes a long way.

Most situations are manageable with the right help, especially if you avoid panic and prioritize safety first.

    And honestly?
Almost every long-term expat here has at least one story that starts with:

“So there we were… stuck on a random road in Guanacaste…” 😅
